Who Should Attend

Trades people who have worked in the electrical, plumbing or building industries for at least five years.

Participants need to have completed a Level 4 trade course, or have a similar level of experience.

  • Basic refrigeration theory
  • Welding safety
  • Purge welding
  • Requirements of the Ozone Layer Protection Act 1996 and its regulations
  • Ozone and the adverse effects of Ozone Depleting Refrigerants (ODRs) on the environment
  • ODRs used within the refrigeration and air conditioning industry
  • Requirements of the Code of Practice (COP) in terms of procedures to reduce the emission of ODRs into the atmosphere
  • Refrigerants and their hazards
  • Electrical hazards and limits of electrical work relevant to split system air conditioning
  • Physics related to air conditioning
  • Refrigeration cycle
  • Types of split system air conditioning
  • Air conditioning principles as they relate to human comfort
  • Pre-installation activities
  • Installing split system air conditioning, performing pre-start and start-up commissioning procedures, providing information to operators and completing required documentation in a training environment.

Pre course study material will be forwarded to each participant for Unit Standards 19666 and 22441 as these are both theory units. This will enable participants to read over the material and familiarise themselves with the content prior to the course commencement.

Certification
Successful candidates will gain recognition of NZQA Unit Standard 19666 - Demonstrate knowledge of ozone and how it relates to the refrigeration and air conditioning industry (Level 3, Credits 3), Unit Standard 22441 - Demonstrate knowledge of split system air conditioning principles and applications (Level 3, Credits 5), Unit Standard 22442 - Install and commission split system air conditioning in a training environment (Level 3, Credits 8), and Unit Standard 23959 - Prepare and purge braze piping for refrigeration and air conditioning (Level 3, Credits 4).
