Students shape up for stylists

Hair fashionistas in training at the MIT School of Hair and Beauty impressed renowned specialists in the hair industry, and celebrity hair stylist, Grant Bettjeman with their works of art on the catwalk.

“The talent here has been exceptional,” says Grant Bettjeman. “Some of the work produced here we would like to see walk out of our salon.”

A carbon copy competition of the international hair event, Wella Trend Vision Awards, was put together by the skilful team of tutors at the MIT hair salon lead by lecturer, Leanne Van der Sluis in conjunction with Wella.

The event itself was a testament to the dedication of our hairdressing tutors at MIT and marked the first time tertiary students were able to put their works in front of these leading industry judges.

“The hairdressing tutors at MIT are the most passionate I have come across,” says Gene Cooksley of the AK Hairdressing Association. “They offer the best of training and frequently expose their students to the wider market and competitions. We are delighted to support them and give these young talented students the opportunity to compete.”

The Palm Room at CHATS was transformed to host the competition and judges at the showcase and dinner.

“It is a great privilege to have Grant and Gene assisting the students and judging their creations,” says Leanne. “The set looked fantastic and we want to thank the team at the School of Culinary and hospitality for their superb performance also.”

Congratulations to Kathy Parkinson who took 1st Prize with a striking ensemble from head to toe.

“The thing that stood out for me with Kathy’s work was the exquisite finish and she showed she understood the category,” says Mr Bettjeman.

“Wella has been a tremendous supporter of the students at the Hair and Beauty School and this debut event is the first of many more to come,” says Leanne.
